Tina Thompson scored 23 points to help Houston beat the Minnesota Lynx 79-67 on Sunday, giving the Comets their first road win of the season. Thompson, who scored 20 or more the eighth time this season, also had eight rebounds as Houston improved to 5-13 with the win. “We like to see Tina in double figures,” said Comets coach Karleen Thompson.

Liberty 71, Monarchs 61

The New York Liberty got off to a fast start and then held off the Sacramento Monarchs down the stretch. Erin Thorn and Cathrine Kraayeveld scored 13 points apiece, leading the Liberty to a 71-61 victory over the Monarchs on Sunday. New York, playing at home for the first time in two weeks, closed the first quarter with a 16-0 run to take a 32-12 lead.

Katie Douglas scored 28 points and Evanthia Maltsi had a career-high 23 to lead the Connecticut Sun to a 110-89 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday night. Asjha Jones added 21 points, and Lindsey Whalen had 17 points and eight assists for the Sun (7-11), who set single-game team records for points and shooting — 63.9 percent (39-for-61).

Silver Stars 80, Storm 73

Erin Buescher scored 11 of her career-high 27 points in the fourth quarter to help the San Antonio Silver Stars hold off the Seattle Storm 80-73 Saturday night. Helen Darling and Sophia Young had 11 points apiece and Vickie Johnson added 10 for San Antonio (11-6), which has won three straight and seven of its last nine.

Monique Currie scored 16 points, DeLisha Milton-Jones added 12 and Nikki Teasley 10 for Washington (6-12), which won for the fourth time in six games.
