Former Giants player MacAfee dead at 77

Kenneth A. MacAfee, who played pro football for the New York Giants in the 1950s, has died. He was 77. MacAfee suffered a suspected heart attack July 4 while playing golf and was pronounced dead later at a Brockton hospital, said Natalie Melo of the Conley Funeral and Cremation Service. MacAfee, an end, played for the Giants from 1954-58, a team spokesman said.

Receiver Bethel Johnson and linebacker Zac Woodfin signed one-year contracts with the Houston Texans on Monday. Johnson caught nine passes for 156 yards for the Minnesota Vikings last season. He played for the New England Patriots from 2003-05. The 28-year-old Johnson averaged 24.6 yards on 147 career kickoff returns, including two touchdowns of 90-plus yards.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed Mexican defensive tackle Mauricio Lopez on Monday. A 27-year-old native of Mexico City, Lopez spent three seasons in NFL Europe, playing with Cologne and Amsterdam. He joins an already deep defensive line unit. The 6-foot-1, 329-pound Lopez had nine tackles and one sack in 2007.
Chargers LB Waters arrested for assault

San Diego Chargers rookie Anthony Waters was charged with hitting a man who threw a rock at his car on a highway. The 22-year-old linebacker was arrested last week on a simple assault and battery charge and released on $1,000 bail, Horry County spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier said Monday. No trial date has been set.

Broadcaster Bill Maas, a former All-Pro lineman, was released from jail Sunday after his arrest on drug possession and weapons charges during a roadside check. Maas and passenger Sarah Murphy were released Sunday and ordered to return to court August 21, jail officials said. The two were arrested Friday night after authorities stopped Maas’ sport utility vehicle along Illinois Route 116 .

Former NFL player and Fox Sports broadcaster Bill Maas was charged with drug possession and weapons charges following a roadside safety check. The 45-year-old Maas and a passenger in his Hummer, Sarah J. Murphy, 27, were arrested late Friday by Illinois State Police. During the stop, police indicated Maas seemed nervous, and he agreed to a search of his vehicle.
