FAMU fires coach charged with stalking

Florida A&M University fired basketball coach Mike Gillespie on Tuesday, less than three months after he was charged with misdemeanor stalking. “This employment action is in the best interests of the men’s basketball program and the university,” said James Ammons, who became the school’s president six weeks ago.
Texas Tech’s Rizvic granted half season

The NCAA granted an unprecedented waiver to Texas Tech center Esmir Rizvic on Monday, allowing him to remain eligible for an additional half season. Rizvic missed the second half of last season after his eye socket was fractured by an opponent’s elbow. The NCAA Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee ruled that he should have the opportunity to play the number of games he sat out.
Lehigh promotes Reed to replace Taylor

Associate head coach Brett Reed was promoted to take over the basketball program at Lehigh on Friday, three days after Billy Taylor left the Mountain Hawks for Ball State. Reed was an assistant at Lehigh for five seasons and held a number of responsibilities, including recruiting coordinator, academic mentor and scout.
NCAA doesn’t override text messaging ban

College coaches must keep recruiting the old-fashioned way — for now. The NCAA’s board of directors took no action Thursday toward overriding a text messaging ban it approved in April, simply sending it back to the membership for another vote at January’s annual NCAA convention. Wake promotes Gaudio to replace Prosser

Dino Gaudio has taken over for Skip Prosser before. More than two decades ago, Gaudio replaced Prosser at a parochial high school in West Virginia and eventually led that team to a state title. On Wednesday, Wake Forest chose Gaudio to again take Prosser’s place, this time to replace his late mentor in the cutthroat Atlantic Coast Conference.

The basketball camp that bears Skip Prosser’s name at Wake Forest went on as scheduled Monday, with nearly 200 young players shooting hoops and learning fundamentals. This was supposed to have been a week for Prosser to teach there. Ex-UNLV star wanted for embezzlement

Former UNLV guard Mark Wade has been charged with embezzling more than $15,000 in his former job as an assistant coach at UC Riverside. Wade, 41, was fired Jan. 5 after nearly two years at the Division I school, university spokeswoman Kris Lovekin said Friday. The Riverside County district attorney’s office has issued an arrest warrant for Wade on one count of felony embezzlement.
Virginia Tech’s Munson granted release

Virginia Tech point guard Nigel Munson, considered the likely starter in 2007-08, has been granted a conditional release from his scholarship, coach Seth Greenberg said Wednesday. Greenberg declined to disclose the conditions of Munson’s release. Munson had expressed an interest in transferring to a school closer to his Washington, D.C., home because of a personal issue.

Henson being treated again for cancer

Former New Mexico State and Illinois coach Lou Henson is being treated again for cancer but said Wednesday he feels strong and even played golf less than a day after resuming chemotherapy treatments. “I’ve started taking chemo again. Even though it was a long session, I’m feeling great,” Henson said. “The doctors told me I could do anything I wanted to do today, so I went out and played 18 holes.”…
