Knicks’ Houston practices for first time

Houston is rejoining the New York Knicks, two years after knee pain forced him to walk away.  The Knicks re-signed their former star guard Wednesday and expect him to begin his attempt to make the team at practice Friday.

Protecting a lead in the final minute of a scrimmage Friday, a group of role players kicked the ball out to the newcomer for an open 3-pointer. Allan Houston buried the shot, just as he had so many times for the New York Knicks. “He could still shoot the ball,” Knicks coach Isiah Thomas said. “He’s probably one of the top 10 best shooters to ever play in our sport.


Marion powers Suns in preseason opener

Shawn Marion had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Phoenix Suns as they opened the preseason with a convincing 110-99 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Thursday night. With Grant Hill getting 17 points and eight rebounds in his first game in a Phoenix uniform, the Suns were off and running from the start, outscoring the Kings 29-18 in the first quarter and led the rest of the way.

Wizards’ Thomas might play this season

Etan Thomas was recovering from open heart surgery Friday, and the doctor who performed the operation didn’t rule out the possibility of the Washington Wizards’ center returning to play in the NBA this season. “We think the function of his heart and lungs should return to normal,” said Dr. Hartzell Schaff, a cardiovascular surgeon at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.


Hudson helps Warriors hold off Lakers

Troy Hudson hit a jumper with less than 1 second to play to lift the Golden State Warriors to a 111-110 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night in the teams’ preseason opener. The Lakers’ ensuing inbound pass was deflected by Golden State’s Austin Croshere. Kelenna Azubuike scored 27 points on 9-for-16 shooting from the field and 7-for-11 from the free-throw line for the Warriors.

Kevin Martin scored 27 points to help the Sacramento Kings beat the Seattle SuperSonics 104-98 on Tuesday night in the debut of new coaches in Reggie Theus and P.J. Carlesimo. Seattle rookie Kevin Durant, the No. 2 pick overall in the draft, struggled to contain Martin, who had 14 first-quarter points, and picked up his fourth foul in the second quarter on a charge.

Yi Jianlian acknowledged he’s already strained from the spotlight after one meaningless game. “There’s a lot of attention on me,” he said through translator Roy Lu. “I feel the pressure.” Yi made his inauspicious debut for the Bucks, but fellow rookie Joakim Noah looked much more like the polished pro in Milwaukee’s 93-88 victory over the Chicago Bulls in the exhibition opener on Tuesday night.

Carmelo Anthony and Von Wafer each scored 17 points, leading the Denver Nuggets to a 119-107 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday night in the first exhibition game for both teams. Marcus Camby had 13 points and 23 rebounds for Denver. J.R. Smith scored 15 points, but was 0-for-7 on 3-pointers.


Mavs rout Spurs in preseason opener

Josh Howard scored 18 points, Dirk Nowitzki added 13 points and eight rebounds, and the Dallas Mavericks beat the San Antonio Spurs 88-67 on Tuesday night in the preseason opener for both teams. Jose Barea had 13 points, 11 in the fourth quarter, and Brandon Bass had 10 points and seven rebounds for Dallas.


LeBron plays little in Cavaliers’ loss

Exhibition? Excruciating was more fitting. It’s a good thing the Cleveland Cavaliers and Washington Wizards have a few more weeks to work out the kinks. Antonio Daniels scored 12 points, Gilbert Arenas had nine in his first game back from offseason knee surgery and the Wizards beat the Cavaliers 81-62 on Tuesday night in an NBA preseason matchup of playoff teams from last season.
